Efficient detection of temporally impulsive dirt impairments in archived films
نویسندگان
چکیده
We propose a novel approach for the detection of temporally impulsive dirt impairments in archived film sequences. Our method does not require motion compensation and uses raw differences between the current frame and each of the previous and next frames to extract a confidence signal which is used to localize and label dirt regions. A key feature of our method is the removal of false alarms by local region-growing. Unlike other work utilizing manually added dirt impairments, we test our method on real film sequences with objective ground truth obtained by infrared scanning. With confidence information extracted from color channels, dirt areas of low contrast to the corresponding gray image can be successfully detected by our method when motion-based methods fail. Comparisons with established algorithms demonstrate that our method offers more efficient, robust and accurate dirt detection with fewer false alarms for a wide range of test material. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. Theodore Vlachos University of Surrey Center for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing Guildford, GU2 7XH, United Kingdom Abstract. A novel non-motion-compensated method is proposed for dirt detection in archived film sequences. A confidence measurement extracted from raw differences between current frame and each of the previous and next frames is used to exploit the temporally impulsive nature...
متن کاملSegmentation-Assisted Dirt Detection for the Restoration of Archived Films
A novel segmentation-assisted method for film dirt detection is proposed. Since dirt manifests as a cluster of pixels whose intensity differs from that of its neighbourhood, we employ segmentation and assume that each small region as a dirt candidate. The assumption is validated by considering raw (non-motion compensated) differences between the current frame and each of the previous and next f...
متن کاملSpike Defect Detection and Removal on Aged Films
Aged films contain valuable historical information. However, some films may have defects due to dirt, scratches or for other reasons. Usually, there is no efficient prediction model to precisely identify these defects. This study proposes a set of new algorithms based on the analysis of features among frames in aged films. Both spatial and temporal characteristics are used. The algorithms furth...
متن کاملReplacement Noise in Image Sequences { Detection
Many archived motion pictures suuer from what we term replacement noise, that is various degradations such as dirt, scratches, ngerprints etc, where the original picture is replaced by some unrelated information. In this paper we use markov random eld based motion eld segmentation to detect these areas, and then interpolate into the gaps using a motion-compensated interpolation scheme to restor...
متن کاملAutomated Detection of Dirt & Sparkle in Digital Film
Filming is an analogue process; it requires a mechanical process to record and view, and the source material itself is prone to decay & abrasion [1]. Film is expensive to store, and prohibitively expensive to restore. It is important to note that these problems do not just affect ‘old’ movies; aside from the minority of films that have made use of digital cinema cameras, all previous & most cur...
